Nonfiction Series Picture Book Workshop with Candace Fleming & Eric Rohmann

Date(s) - 10/09/2021
12:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Join us on Zoom Saturday, October 9, 12:00 PM PDT for an in-depth workshop on creating nonfiction picture books led by Candace Fleming and Eric Rohmann, the award-winning creative team behind such stunning works as Giant Squid and Honeybee: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera. This event has a special focus on the craft of nonfiction picture books, but many of its lessons will resonate with creators of fiction picture books, too.

Busting Out of the Picture Book Box

Does your current picture book project need a reboot? Are you looking for a creative breakthrough? This workshop is intended to help you break out of the box as we discuss scope and angle, expository vs. narrative, scene and structure, word choice and tone, tension and drama, and, of course, making room for the illustrator. Come prepared to play, experiment, and share.

Registration fees: $25 for SCBWI members / $30 for nonmembers

Note that registration closes October 7, 2021, or once we reach capacity. All confirmed registrants will receive an email containing Zoom-access information ahead of the workshop. Several days after the live event, you will also receive a replay link.

Candace Fleming is the author of more than forty books. Among her nonfiction titles are Giant Squid, Amelia Lost: The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart, and The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia. Her 2020 titles include The Rise and Fall of Charles Lindbergh, which won the 2021 YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction, and Honeybee: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera, winner of the 2021 Sibert Medal. She is also the recipient of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, as well as a two-time recipient of the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award for Nonfiction, the ALA Sibert Honor, and SCBWI’s Golden Kite Award.

Painter, printmaker, and author Eric Rohmann has illustrated numerous books for children, including Giant Squid and Honeybee; he won the Caldecott Medal for My Friend Rabbit, and a Caldecott Honor for Time Flies.
