Yuck-Appeal: How to Suck in Young Readers
Icky, sticky, eewy, gooey, we’ve all witnessed the yuck factor winning over young readers. During this session we will study current kidlit, analyze the ick, and discuss ways to maximize the gross in our writing. Come yuck it up!
We will also take a look at the what, why, and how of the human emotion: disgust. (Helpful Hint: Finish breakfast before joining or don’t, and get a gut reaction to the examples we study!)
About Heather:
My interest in nature led to a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Environmental Education. I developed and directed the McDowell Environmental Center. After leaving the center, I taught in the classroom, directed summer camps, and finally discovered writing! I’ve published 17 books for young people and owe much of my publishing knowledge to the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, particularly the Southern Breeze Region. My work is represented by Rubin Pfeffer.
